Canada’s Energy Map

July 3, 2009

energymap2What’s red and white and “read” all over? It’s our Energy Map, a collection of interactive maps that helps you “see” Canada’s full energy system in a glance.

“Energy is an important topic in Canada, where extreme climates and sprawling, far flung communities require more energy for heating and transportation,” said Dave Carson, vice president of the Centre for Energy. “Canada is the fifth largest energy producer in the world. The diversity of our energy system matches the diversity of our geography and our ways of life. Demand for reliable, bias-balanced energy information is at an all-time high, and through the Energy Map, the Centre for Energy helps to address that demand.”

For more than three years, the Energy Map has served teachers, students and interested energy consumers all across Canada. Now it is updated with interactive features and even more in-depth information.

The Energy Map displays the gamut of Canada’s complex energy system: crude oil, oil sands and natural gas reserves and production; pipelines; refineries; nuclear, hydro and thermal electricity generating sites; coal mines; wind farms and tidal power facilities. Individual maps depict the locations of a specific energy-related activity, such as hydroelectricity generation, oil production or wind power for a specific province and include information pertinent to that activity and that province.

Layered with different types of energy-related information, the map allows users to simply point and click to learn how we power the True North, strong and free.
