Who wants a refill?

April 21, 2009

If you like the smell of coffee in the morning, then the new RITI coffee printer is the office accessory for you!

That’s right. The coffee printer.

Does it brew and print at the same time? No, but this new eco-friendly printer does turn your leftover coffee grounds into a sustainable source of ink for your printer. Ink cartridges are notoriously costly to buy or refill, can stain your hands if mishandled and are decidedly unfriendly to the environment.

Not a coffee drinker—no problem. The RITI printer uses tea dregs too. So how does it work? Simply place the remains into an ink case on the top of the printer, insert a piece of paper and move the ink case left and right to print the image. The dregs reportedly print onto the paper just like ink.

And if you’re looking to cut your energy costs, it’s manually operated. To use, you simply move the cartridge back and forth. Although it doesn’t require a power source—which is handy if you have important documents to print in a blackout—it makes it impractical for everyday office use, or for printing large documents.

But it does mark progress towards energy-saving and innovative ideas. That, and your paperwork never smelled so good. Which only leaves one question: who’s wants a refill?
