Google haunts consumers with spooky energy calculator

October 22, 2008

With Halloween knocking on our doorstep, Google created their own haunted house to help consumers battle fiendishly high energy costs.

The global search company compiled a 5-point interactive energy saving calculator. It works by tallying the potential cost savings of making a few simple changes. The haunted house of ghastly energy horrors looks at energy demons, like the eerie ghost of escaping air, energy-sucking electronics and ravenous energy zombies.

The calculator displays potential cost savings for each action. For example, closing your flue damper when your fireplace is not in use can save you $190 a year. Replacing ‘heat demon’ incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents saves $6 per year for every bulb replaced.

After answering all 5 questions, the calculator then gives you your total energy savings per year plus the estimated reduction in your carbon footprint. $650 in cost savings per year translates to 8,300 pounds less of carbon dioxide or the equivalent of not driving your car for 251 days.

Take the House of Horrors test today and find out how you can ward off spooky energy bills.
